Recently, I was reminded of the powerful practice of asking the question, “What would love do?” in times of decision or challenge.

Consider for a moment the kinds of things that we often ask ourselves during those kinds of moments. When we are reactive, stressed, confused, or troubled we often ask ourselves questions like, “What should I do?” “What’s going to happen if …?” “Why is this happening to me?” or “Why did they do that?”

These kinds of questions can often just trigger us or stimulate worry, rumination, overwhelm or feelings of disempowerment.

By changing the question we ask ourselves in challenging, triggering or confusing moments we can completely change our focus and our response.

How one question makes us stronger and kinder

By asking ourselves “What would love do?” in all of those important moments of our lives we call forth the strength, wisdom and love inherent in our true nature.

It’s a way of calling our whole self and our full awareness to the moment so we can respond with the very best of who we are.

This practice of calling on our true nature could dramatically alter, not only how we felt in that moment, but also how we perceive the situation and how we responded to the people and circumstances around us.

By asking this one simple question in the moments that matter, we would be more able to lead with love in all the various dimensions of our lives.

This week’s invitation: Keep asking “What would love do?”

This week, I invite you to experiment with this simple but powerful enquiry. Keep asking yourself, “What would love do?”

Do it as an experiment and see what unfolds in your mind, in your body, in your relationships and in your life.

Keep asking it as you interact with people at work, at home as well as strangers on the streets and in traffic. Especially draw on it in moments when you get triggered, when you feel reactive or when you are confused.

Include this inquiry in the way you relate to yourself. When you look in the mirror, when you make a mistake or when you feel tired or distressed, keep asking “what would love do?”

You might not get immediate clear answers to your question and that’s ok. The point here really is to hold this enquiry close to your heart this week.

See if you can be willing to kind of hang out in this inquiry with patience and curiosity and just see what arises. Let it colour and shape your thoughts, words and actions and experiment with what happens when you lead with love.
